Human Trafficking Hotline: When to Call, What to Say, and Why It Matters

Human Trafficking Hotline

Human trafficking can happen anywhere—right now, even in your community. Knowing when and how to use a trafficking hotline can save lives. At ProtectAll, we want you to be informed, prepared, and empowered to act.

What Is the Human Trafficking Hotline?

The Human Trafficking Hotline is a confidential, 24/7 service for reporting suspected human trafficking and connecting victims with safety and support. It’s operated in the U.S. by Polaris, but similar hotlines exist worldwide.

It’s more than just a phone number—it’s a lifeline.

In the U.S., call:
1-888-373-7888
Or text “BEFREE” to 233733

When Should You Call the Hotline?

You don’t need to “be sure.” You just need to care enough to call. The hotline is there for anyone who suspects something isn’t right.

You can call if:

  • You see something suspicious (e.g., someone unable to speak freely, signs of abuse, or control)

  • A person appears afraid, disoriented, or physically harmed

  • You witness exploitative working conditions

  • A child is in the presence of unrelated adults or showing signs of trafficking

  • You are a victim or survivor needing support

Calling is free, anonymous, and non-judgmental. Trained advocates will guide you.

What Happens When You Call?

Many people hesitate to call, unsure what to expect. Here’s how the hotline works:

  1. You’re connected to a live advocate trained in trafficking response and trauma care.

  2. They will listen first, then ask for any details you’re comfortable sharing (location, signs, etc.).

  3. You can remain completely anonymous—you don’t have to give your name.

  4. The hotline can coordinate with local law enforcement only if you consent, unless a minor is involved.

You are never asked to “prove” anything. The goal is safety, not interrogation.

Hotlines save lives, but outreach, education, and survivor support begin long before a call is made. Donate to expand our frontline programs. button

You Don’t Need to Be an Expert to Save a Life

Here’s what you can say when calling the hotline—even if you’re unsure:

“I saw someone who looked distressed. She was with an older man who wouldn’t let her speak. It looked wrong. I just want someone to know.”

“There’s a house in our neighborhood where people come and go all night. The windows are always covered. I think something might be happening there.”

“I’m not sure if this is trafficking, but I want to report it just in case.”

That’s enough. Your call could trigger a wellness check, an investigation, or a safe exit.

You don’t have to be a professional to change a life. And you don’t have to be wealthy to fund freedom. Give what you can to protect survivors. button

Know the Signs of Human Trafficking

Red Flags may include:

  • Lack of control over ID or personal items

  • Scripted or robotic responses

  • Working long hours in unsafe conditions

  • Fearful, anxious, or submissive behavior

  • Unexplained bruises, malnourishment, or signs of abuse

  • Not being allowed to speak freely

Some signs are subtle. Trust your gut—and trust the hotline to take it from there.

If You Are a Victim or Survivor

You deserve safety. You deserve freedom. You are not alone.

Whether you escaped years ago or just found a moment to reach out, the hotline can:

  • Help you find a safe shelter

  • Connect you with legal and medical support

  • Assist in exiting your situation safely

  • Guide you to trauma-informed counselors and survivor networks

All with compassion, confidentiality, and respect.
